The zeros were the clue. Days before any announcement, Taylor Swift’s Instagram bio suddenly read “sh0w business f0r y0u”, with every letter O swapped for a zero, and fans went to work decoding it. On Tuesday, 22 September, a countdown on taylorswift.com answered the question: a new single called “Patient Zero”.

One day later she went bigger. The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore is an expanded edition of her record-breaking 2025 album, with four brand-new songs. It is out on Friday, 25 September 2026.

The 4 New Songs

The Encore takes the original 12 tracks and adds four more, bringing the album to 16 songs:

Swift has not said what the songs are about yet, so every meaning floating around online right now is fan theory. We will know more when they drop on Friday.

Born in Sweden, Out of Gratitude

The new songs come from the same team behind the original album: Max Martin and Shellback. Swift says she took a trip to Sweden to celebrate the album’s success, and “there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs.”

“I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made.” — Taylor Swift

The Music Video Premieres at the VMAs

The “Patient Zero” music video will premiere during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, 27 September. Swift directed it herself, and it stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. Three collectible CD versions of the single are also available on her official store: the standard recording, an acoustic version and a piano version, each with its own double-sided cover.

A Designer’s Take: Orange Glitter to Charcoal Grey

As a design studio, we were just as interested in how this was launched as in what was launched. The rollout is a masterclass in visual rebranding.

The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore artwork with orange glitter type over red velvet curtains
The Encore artwork keeps the Showgirl stage: velvet curtains and orange glitter type.

The Encore artwork stays in the Showgirl world: red velvet curtains, gold sequins and tall, condensed glitter letters that tumble across the frame like they are taking a bow. It feels like the last number of a show.

Then “Patient Zero” turns the lights down. Her website moved from sparkly orange to dark grey. A new photo went up on the site for a few hours before it was swapped for the new icon. The type changes too: a classic, high-contrast serif with a black glitter texture, set in capitals with plenty of empty space around it. It is quieter, colder and more serious — and you get all of that before hearing a single note.

That is the lesson for any brand, big or small: a launch is not only the product. It is the story your visuals tell before anyone reads a word.
